Chunky Cable Knit Headband

Even beginners can tackle this cable knit headband pattern!  If you’ve never knit cables before, this is a great pattern to start with! It features one of the most basic cable designs: A six stitch, twisted cable.  When working this pattern, you’ll get lots of practice holding stitches on a cable needle in front of your work, then knitting those held stitches to get the classic twisted look.

**2020 update, this pattern has a video tutorial! Visual learners rejoice!

This is a super simple pattern using super bulky yarn, and I recommend wool or a wool blend yarn like Wool-Ease Thick & Quick from Lion Brand for the added stretch that wool content affords.

You’ll need:

To begin, cast on 14 stitches. You can use whichever method you’d like. I used the long tail cast on but you could also do a provisional cast on to close with a three needle bind-off at the end of the pattern.

Cable Knit Headband Pattern

  • Row 1: K4, P6, K4

  • Row 2: K 14

  • Row 3: K4, P6, K4

  • Row 4: K14

  • Row 5: K4, P6, K4

  • Row 6: K4, C3F***, K4

***C3F stands for “cable 3 front/forward.” To C3F, you’ll hold the next 3 sts on a cable needle and let it dangle in front of your work. Knit the next 3 sts on your left needle, skipping the 3 you have on hold. Then, knit the 3 sts off of your cable needle as if it was your left needle.

Repeat rows 1-6 until the length of your headband fits comfortably around your head (about 20 inches long).

Bind off after a “row 5” row and seam your bind off end to the cast on end. That’s it! I hope you enjoy this quick and easy Chunky Cable Knit Headband Pattern and get to work making tons of these for all your friends and family. If you’re on Ravelry, click here to share your project.

If you’ve found wrestling with a cable needle a little annoying, you might be interested in checking out this video tutorial I made demonstrating a way to knit a faux cable! You get a very similar twisted cable look effect without ever having to skip stitches or put them on hold! You find that video here!
