I don’t crochet afghans often, but they have a special place in my heart because they were my grandma’s specialty! Whenever there was a big event in the family, she already had an afghan going months in advance. She was always careful to pick colors that went perfectly with the decor of the recipient and, at the time, I had no idea how much time went into her huge, meticulous, often single crochet, afghans.

Now that I’m an avid (dare I say, professional?) crocheter myself, her afghans are even more amazing to me and a beautiful legacy treasured by every member of the family!

audiobooks to listen to while crocheting

But mustering up the nerve for such a lengthy project doesn’t come easy! So I like to have a good audiobook or podcast to carry me through.

My latest obsession are the Featured Deals at Chirp Audiobooks which let you pick up audiobooks to listen to for as little as 99 cents! And NO subscription makes it a great deal.

And I have a special coupon code for my readers. Use code “snugglery5” for $5 off any audiobook of your choice. That makes many of them totally free! Thanks Chirp ;).

Materials

YARN

Any worsted weight yarn will do. I would choose one on the heavier side. Think Caron One Pound or Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran. I used Ice Yarns Saver (check out yarn haul video here) for the majority of the blanket and a little bit of Lionbrand Wool Ease for the accent color. You’ll need:

yarn haul

2000 yards (1850m) of your main two colors, 1000 yards each.

150 yards (140m) of an accent color

TOOLS

We’ll use a 5mm (US H) hook for the border, a 5.5mm (US I) hook for the main linen stitch pattern of the blanket, a smaller hook for finishing work, something 7-8in tall to wrap for your tassels and a pair of scissors.

SIZE

Finished size 48 in x 60 in, Gauge 4 in = about 14 st and 17 rows in single crochet with the 5mm hook.

Stitches

Single Crochet (sc): Insert your hook, yarn over, pull up a loop. Yarn over, pull through two loops.

Linen Stitch: Single crochet in the next chain space, chain one.

Chain Stitch (ch): Yarn over, pull through the loop on your hook.

Pattern

Tips to know before you start:

  1. Pull through with the new color to complete the last stitch of a row before a color change.
  2. Twist your old yarn around your new yarn before chaining up the next row to carry the color up the side
  3. Turning chains don’t count as stitches for the whole pattern
  4. The linen stitch (after the set up row) involves working stitches into chain spaces rather than into stitches

ROW 2: Ch1, turn. Make 1sc in each stitch (181 sts).

Repeat row 2 for a total of 8 rows of single crochet, or until your piece measures 2-2.5in tall

Repeat rows 11 and 12, changing color every 2 rows, for a total of 202 rows. End after two rows of color A.

FINAL BORDER: With your accent color, ch1, turn and work 1sc in the first st. **Work 1sc in the next st, 1sc in the next ch sp** repeat between ** to the last two sts, and work 1sc in each of the last two sts to complete one row of solid single crochet.

Continue working in solid single crochet for a total of 8 rows to match the beginning of the blanket.

Tassels

We’ll be making 22 tassels for this project, spread evenly across the 181 stitches with about 18 stitches between each tassel.

adding tassels to a crochet blanket

In color A, wrap your yarn 12 times around a notebook or videogame CD jacket (about 7-8in tall). Cut only the strand attached to the yarn ball. Slide the whole loop off and begin twisting it up from either end.

Twist until the center of the loop folds in on itself to create the head of the tassel.

Wrap your accent color 20-30 times to create a little “scarf” for your tassel.

Secure any loose ends of the little wrap around your tassel and cut the bottom loops to release the fringe.

Attach your tassel with an extra bit of yarn through the center of the little tassel “nubbin” and through the intended stitch you’d like to attach it to.

Love the colors on this blanket. I'm mainly a knitter but my grandmother taught me to crochet when I was very little. This may be the pattern that brings me back to crochet!!! Would you mind telling me which of the Grey's from ice year you used? Dark or light grey? The link you provided takes me to lilac. Thank you.?

That's wonderful :) I used the "light grey" which doesn't look very light if you ask me...haha. I've noticed different dyelots from ice yarns can vary a lot. But that should get you close! Glad you like it <3
