Suzette stitch crochet ear warmer overview

This pattern is worked flat and seamed. You’ll start with an even number of chains to determine the width of your headband and work rows until the length=head circumference. Then, the piece is finished with a unique, slip stitch twisted seam detailed below.

Materials

A little under 100 yards (90m) of a worsted or aran weight yarn like Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran. I used the colorway “Slate.”

I used a 5mm (US H) crochet hook, and that’s all you need! All the seaming can be done with just your hook and slip stitches. No tapestry needle required.

Gauge and Sizing

The single crochet gauge for this yarn/hook combo will be about 12 sc and 13 rows on a 4″x4″ (10cm x 10cm) swatch. The gauge in the suzette stitch pattern is about 16sts by 13 rows on a 4″x4″ swatch.

Below you’ll see starting chain and row count suggestions for average adult, child and baby size headbands. The adult size headband will be about 4.5″ wide (12cm). The ultimate size is very adjustable. Change the width of the headband by changing the starting chain count (even number) and simply work as many rows as you need to fit around the head before seaming.

Dc: double crochet

Sc: single crochet

St(s): stitch(es)

Ch 16 for adults, 12 for kids and 10 for babies.

Row 1: Skip the first ch. *Make 1sc and 1dc in the next chain, skip the next ch.* Repeat between ** to the last ch, and make 1sc and 1dc in the last ch.

Row 2: Ch1 (doesn’t count as a st) and turn your work. *Skip the first st, make 1sc and 1dc in the next st.* Repeat between ** to the end of the row

Repeat row 2 until your piece measures about 21″ (54cm) for adults, about 19″ (49cm) for kids and 15″ (38cm) for babies. Or about 50, 42, or 36 rows respectively.

After the last row, don’t fasten off. We’ll use your working yarn to slip stitch seam the ends together!

The Twisted Seam

Either side can be the “right side” since this pattern is the same on both sides. With your piece laying flat, bring the foundation chain and final row ends together.

Step 2: Stagger the ends so that the corner of one, is lined up with the center of the other.

Step 3: Fold the outer pieces around like little sandwiches.

Step 4: Using that live loop you have on one of the sides, slip stitch seam all 4 edges together and turn your piece right-side-in!

There you have it! I hope you enjoyed this suzette stitch crochet ear warmer pattern and learning how to do that deceptively simple twist-front seam! Be sure to check out the video tutorial and subscribe to my YouTube channel to catch the next one too!
