How To Crochet The Virus Shawl

Starting Chain
Chain 10 and slip stitch into your first chain to join in the round.
Row 1
Chain 3 (counts as a stitch) and make 19 more double crochets into the ch 10 ring from the previous row. (20 stitches total)
Row 2
Chain 3 (counts as a stitch), turn, and make 1 double crochet in each stitch from the previous row and into the top of your starting chain 3 from the previous row. (20 stitches total)
Row 3
Chain 4 (counts as a double crochet and chain 1), turn, then *double crochet in the next stitch and chain 1*, repeat between ** for each stitch and finish with a double crochet in the top of your turning ch3 from the previous row. (20 sts, 19 ch1 spaces)
Row 4
Chain 10 (counts as double crochet and chain 7), single crochet in the 2nd chain 1 space of the row, *chain 4, skip a chain space and single crochet in the next space* repeat between ** twice to make a total of 3 chain 4 spaces.
Then, chain 7 skip a space, single crochet in the next space then repeat, chain 7, skip a space, single crochet into the next chain 1 space.
*Chain 4, skip a chain space and single crochet in the next space* repeat between ** twice to make a total of 3 chain 4 spaces. Finally chain 7 and double crochet in the 3rd ch of the previous chain 4. (2 corner ch 7 spaces, 6 chain 4 spaces, 2 center chain 7 spaces)
Row 5
Chain 3 and make a total of 10 double crochets (counting your chain 3) into the chain 7 space. *Single crochet into the next chain 4 space, chain 4* repeat between** once, then single crochet into next chain 4 space.
10 double crochets into the chain 7 space, repeat, 10 double crochets in the next chain 7 space.
*Single crochet into the next chain 4 space, chain 4* repeat between** once, then single crochet into next chain 4 space. 10 double crochets in the last chain 7 space. (40 dc, 6 sc, 4 ch 4 spaces)
Row 6
Chain 3 (counts as a stitch), turn, and *make 1 double crochet in each stitch from the previous row. Single crochet into the next chain 4 space, chain 4, single crochet into next chain 4 space.* Repeat between ** once. And double crochet into each remaining double crochet from the previous row including the top of your starting chain 3. (40 dc, 4 sc, 2 ch 4 spaces)
Row 7
Chain 4 (counts as a double crochet and chain 1) and double crochet in the next stitch, *chain 1, double crochet* repeat between ** until you reach the chain 4 space, make a single crochet into the chain 4 space. Double crochet into the next double crochet stitch then repeat between ** until you reach the next chain 4 space.
Again make 1 single crochet into the chain 4 space, double crochet into the next double crochet stitch and repeat between ** to the end of the row, working your last double crochet into the top of the turning chain 3 from the previous row.
Row 8
Chain 10 (counts as double crochet and chain 7), single crochet in the 2nd chain 1 space of the row, *chain 4, skip a chain space and single crochet in the next space* repeat between ** twice to make a total of 3 chain 4 spaces.
~Then, chain 7 skip 1 chain space, skip the next single crochet and skip the next chain space. Single crochet in the 2nd chain space from the center single crochet.~
Repeat between ** until you reach the center point of your shawl. If you have not yet reached the center point of your shawl after repeating **, repeat between ~~. If you are at the center point of your shawl, continue on.
Center point: Then, chain 7 skip a space, single crochet in the next space then repeat, chain 7, skip a space, single crochet into the next chain 1 space.
Repeat the 3 chain 4 instructions and/or the chain 7 space instructions until you have one chain 1 space left. Chain 7 and make 1 double crochet in the 3rd chain of your turning chain 4 from the previous row. (2dcs, 2, ch 7 spaces, 17 scs, 12 ch 4 spaces and 2 center point ch 7 spaces)
Row 9
Make 10 double crochets in every chain 7 space. And work (1 single crochet, chain 4)x2 1 single crochet, across each set of 3 chain 4 spaces.
Row 10
Make 1 double crochet in each double crochet from the previous row. Work 1 single crochet, chain 4, 1 single crochet across each set of 2 chain 4 spaces.
Repeat
Repeat rows 7-10 until your shawl is as long as you’d like or until you run out of yarn. Fasten off after completing a “row 7” row for the most flattering edge to your project.
